How a Home Performance Diagnosis Works
Comfort, efficiency problems, and air quality in the home cannot be solved by equipment alone; the house is an interactive system and requires a "Whole House" evaluation and adjustment to correct these imperfections. Air pressure and moisture interactions between the equipment, air moving devices (such as ducts, radiators, or fan coils), ventilation systems and the house itself are the key elements of the "Whole House" building science based approach.
A specially-trained Comfort and Indoor Air Quality Consultant will visit your home using the latest technology in diagnostic instruments and testing procedures to identify problems that affect your indoor living environment. The consultant will then provide you with a personalized plan to solve these problems permanently!
During your Whole House Comfort Checkup, you will learn how to:
- Achieve even, comfortable temperatures throughout your home
- Maintain healthy, comfortable humidity levels year-round
- Reduce dust, system noise, and repair bills
- Save money on your utility bills! (typically between 10% and 50%)
Infiltrometer™ Blower Door Test
All houses should have some air leakage for proper circulation of fresh air, however most houses leak too much. Symptoms of excessive leakage include uneven temperatures throughout the house, wasted energy, excessive dust, cold drafts, dry air during the winter, and clammy air in the summer. Contrarily, some houses are too airtight and may have unhealthy indoor air.
Using an Infiltrometer™, which is a computerized blower door system, your Comfort and Indoor Air Quality Consultant will evaluate how leaky or airtight your home is, and
furthermore explain where improvements can be made.
Air Leakage Evaluation
Not all leaks are created equal. From an air quality standpoint, those around your doors and windows are good leaks, since they let in fresh outdoor air. Bad leaks let in dusty, moldy, or polluted air from an attic, garage, sump pump, or crawl space. Leaky air ducts often bring in dirty air and cause your heating and cooling equipment to perform well-below peak efficiency. As part of the Infiltrometer™ blower door test, your consultant will pinpoint where your home's worst leaks are and where improvements can be made. No matter what the source, leaks are one of the causes of high utility bills.
Air Flow Analysis
Air flow can be analyzed from each individual vent in the home to determine which vents are providing more airflow and others that have very little airflow. This data can be used to dampen the ventilation or even set up zoning so that the appropriate flow can be delivered to each room. Climate Makers, Inc. uses an Air Flow Meter to measure ventilation flow with accuracy and precision.
